How To Find Out Who Your Blog Fans Are..
Oct 27th
Do you know who your blog fans are – returning visitors who actually stay on your blog and read it?
Google Analytics does.
Why would you need to care, you ask?
Other than the fact that it’s pretty cool to know the nitty-gritties of your traffic, these statistics will help you to learn what your sticky content is.
What posts do your readers keep coming back to and bookmark? What pages have the least bounce rate?
Let’s take it a step further: if you knew what your best content was according to your readers, could you make sure it was well-optimized for search engines and push it to the top of Google? Wouldn’t that be a smart move?
Here’s how to find out in who your fans are in 3 simple steps.
Step 1.
In your Google Analytics dashboard, find “all visits” tab. Click on it and unselect “all visits”.
Step 2.
The segments you are interested in are:
1. Returning visitors – as you know, websites use cookies to identify folks who come back to your blog after an initial visit. Congrats, it means you did something right the first time around and managed to get them hooked.
2. Direct traffic – visitor who get to your site via a bookmark or by typing in your URL are considered direct traffic. They have obviously been to your blog before, that’s why they know how to get to it “directly”.
3. Non-bounce visits – visitors who visited more than one page per visit.
You can choose one segment at a time or all three. Press “apply”.
You should see a graph similar to this one:
Step 3
Analyze to your heart’s content!
These are the things I would look at (in the content section of your report):
1. What pages are frequented by my “fans”?
In my case, the first 3 are my Traffic Generation Cafe home page, Promote Yourself page, and Increase Blog Traffic page.
2. What is my search engine ranking for those pages? What if I tweak them a bit more: come up with a better title tag, tweak the keywords with Scribe SEO a bit, focus on building a few quality links to those pages?

Get on the front page of search listings without SEO – it’s called blogging
Oct 20th
Some say that SEO is a black art, others claim it is a science. If you read all the blogs, ebooks and articles out there, it can seem that SEO is a bit of a minefield There’s META tags and titles, alt tags and content, keyword density and page rank, links and reciprocal links – and that’s just for starters. No wonder the average business is confused when it comes to SEO!
After reading all there is to read, and heeding the warning tales of dire Google penalties if you get it wrong, you could be forgiven for thinking that the only way you’re going to get that coveted front page on Google is by paying an SEO expert hundreds, maybe thousands, of pounds.
Well you’ll be delighted to know that there is another way, and all it needs to take is a little of your time.
What do you have to do?
Start blogging!
OK, it’s not just a case of writing the first thing that comes into your head, but believe me, blogging really can help your search engine positions. Here are 5 simple steps to blogging for search engine positions.
1) Find out what keyphrases your audience are searching for
Use the Google Keywords tool to find out what people are searching for related to your industry. Do you sell a particular range of jewellery or handbag? Look and see what phrases people are looking for regarding those items. A professional service? Find out the issues people are having. Knowing what people are searching for allows you to tailor your blogs to those phrases.
2) Write your blog titles with those phrases in mind
One of the most visited pages on my blog recently is the ‘What size should the new Twitter background be?’ post. With ‘New Twitter’ being launched, I knew that people would be wondering how to redesign their new backgrounds, so I wrote a blog post with that in mind. You can do the same. Solve a problem ‘How to’, ‘How can I’, How do I’ blog posts that answer queries and problems tend to do well in search engines, and bring in visitors.
3) Make sure you use your keyphrase in the body of your post
Don’t just put your phrase in your blog title, make sure it’s used a couple of times in the body of your blog too. That way Google will know that your post is relevant to the phrase being searched for.
4) Update your blog regularly
Google will come back and index content that is updated regularly, so ensure that your blog is updated frequently It doesn’t have to be every day, but a couple of times a week at least is optimal.
5) Link to your blog posts
Tweet them, Facebook them, refer to them from your website – Google follows links, and the more relevant links you have to your post, the more likelihood of it being indexed. Don’t spend hours on this; a few well placed links will do the job.
The simple fact is that Google loves content – and the more keyword strong content you can post, the more chance you have of being indexed and being found by people searching.

Want Quality backlinks? Follow Me!
Oct 19th
Do Follow backlinks anyone?
Part of the process of blog commenting (whether it be for a niche site or for your own branded blog) is about finding good quality Do-Follow Blogs to leave your comments on. And the process of finding these blogs is sometimes made trickier than it needs to be. I mean really – haven’t we got enough to worry about without going through the process of typing in specific key strings with say link: “do follow:” ‘powered by wordpress’ whatever it may be, and THEN having to search for a blog within that mess?!
That’s why I have taken the liberty of adding the Custom Google Do-Follow Search Bar to my Blog’s sidebar (yep -see it there! Awesome hey)
The beautiful thing about this search bar is that you can click on the little Google+ image below it and have this search bar added to your own iGoogle Homepage!*
How to use the Google Do-Follow Blog Search bar
It’s a no brainer really – which is what I like about it, but simply put – enter your chosen niche (say: gardening) and you will get a list of all the blogs within that niche that are do-follow. Simple as that.
I would also advise installing SEOQuake or any other SEO extension for your browser that gives you PageRank and other details instantly. This way you can not only get a list of great Do-Follow Blogs to comment on, you can also prioritize the best ones, and make sure you are getting quality backlinks to your site in the process.
Other Blog Updates
How are your eyes doing? Better now I hope.
I know the future is bright and all – but it is now safe to take off your shades, or turn your monitors brightness back up again – or whatever, because I have finally seen the light (no pun intended) and scaled back the ‘soothing yellow’ that welcomed you previously. I think this new look is much more pleasing on the eye (to the eye?) – but since I was the one who spent 4 hours doing it, I WOULD say that
Busy Building Backlinks
Apart from making sure I keep up to date with all the blogs I am subscribed to, and keeping this blog fresh with (awesome?) content, I am busy busy busy building backlinks to my niche sites.
This is a process that takes time, is a constant learning cycle – and is set in an ever changing environment, but I will do my best to keep you up to date with what is working, and of course – what is not.

Make Money with Twitter
Oct 18th
Today, I’d like to introduce you to my guest author, Harris Fellman. Harris recently launched CoupDeTwitter – a course on how to properly get started with twitter, get lots of followers, and turn those followers into cash.
He is by no means a Social Media Purist, but still he teaches what he considers the “right way” to interact on Twitter & other Social Media platforms (hint: it ain’t by spamming people your offers). Harris has a number of years of success in the internet marketing realm and I feel very honored to have him as a guest author today.
With that … here’s Harris’ blog post entitled “Make Money with Twitter”:
So, once again, here’s a quick recap of how you can stage your own Peaceful (or Hostile) Take Over using Twitter.
- First get a good network of followers going.
- Build relationships with your network.
- Get your followers to click on your links & tell others about you by retweeting your messages
- Make Money with Twitter.
In previous posts, I’ve shared with you simple ways to do steps 1 through 3. In the last post I even added a dimension to step #3 which showed you how to put all that retweeting on HYPERDRIVE by providing things of value to your growing list of followers.
Read the other posts in the series:
- How to Take Over Twitter
- Get Targeted Twitter Followers
- Why Build Relationships on Twitter?
- Big Tips to Get People Retweeting
But by now, you must be thinking that something is missing. Especially if you’re in business you may, at this point, be wondering if this is just a lot of wheel spinning and wasting your time talking to people.
You’re asking “But, Harris, HOW do I make money?”
Which of course brings me to today’s post. If you take the actions that I’ve been telling you about throughout this process you’ll certainly create a growing list of followers… most likely into the thousands and beyond but up till now we haven’t talked about how to tie it all together and start making some money with this newfound connectedness.
Here’s the thing. You CAN make money using Twitter and you WILL.
But it’s got to be a carefully planned process because you can easily ruin your entire pot of soup you’ve been so lovingly stirring and adding ingredients to all this time. If you just start throwing tons of pepper into the pot now, you’ll just ruin all your efforts.
So, let’s unwrap this a bit. What is Twitter?
Twitter is really a free-for-all, information gathering, networking, and socializing all going on at the same time, real time, all the time. It’s kind of like being in the middle of a crowded street in New York at rush hour.
People are streaming in all directions with a phone in one ear, a blackberry in their hand AND trying to hail a cab with the other.
It’s HARD to get and keep people’s attention, and if you smack them in the head with a bowl of soup from your cart when they’re not looking they’re going to disengage… just like that. Poof. Relationship damaged. Do it a couple more times and Kablooey. Relationship vanished.
Not only that, they’ll probably be pissed you spilled soup on them.
There’s a couple things to consider here, but the main idea is NOT to try and make money ON Twitter directly. It doesn’t really work. Nothing will get people to unfollow you faster.
What you want to do is have a ratio of no more than 5-10% of your tweets even trying to promote anything (whether it’s your product or a product you’re promoting as an affiliate.
What we’ve been doing over the past couple of posts is gently stirring that pot of soup. Building relationships, getting people to click, getting people to retweet. Letting those aromas fill the kitchen and start making your followers hungry for more.
You’ve got them retweeting your messages, clicking your links and now you’re going to want to entice them even more by dropping a few breadcrumbs that lead them to your steaming bowl of luscious soup.
The key is to start interspersing all this great value with things of your own.
Links that lead your hungry followers to even MORE good value and FREE content that you provide, luring them off of Twitter and onto your own site. If you don’t have you own site yet, there are certainly plenty of affiliate products you can promote.
But I still don’t recommend sending people straight to a sales page. You have to lull your followers away from the noisy street and into your tasty cafe. The content can be many things: teleseminars, webinars, even a live Ustream show… the possibilities are truly endless as long as you think “VALUE FIRST“.
Once you get their attention directed at you and you alone THEN it’s time to show them your real wares and convince them to buy your soup, so to speak.
You can even give them a taste of your soup to really get them hooked before asking them to buy the entire bowl. By that time they’re hungry and they’re not distracted by all the noise going on around them.
So, that’s the big Twitter secret.
To make money on Twitter, you have to get people AWAY from Twitter!
There’s plenty more *soup* for you when you join Coup De Twitter! Members are given an pre-installed “Base of Operations” site that act as an easy place for you to place these ‘things of value’ that I’m referencing above. You’ll also get 7 easy tactics for making money on Twitter and even more advanced tactics like the ones I’ve mentioned in this post. All shown in simple step-by-step videos that walk you through the entire process. Go ahead and check out the FREE VIDEO for more information right now.

Google Webmaster Tools Launches Improved Options for Handling URL Parameters
Oct 11th
Google Webmaster Tools Launches Improved Options for Handling URL Google first introduced parameter handling about a year ago. When I wrote about the launch, I described how optional parameters in URLs could cause canonicalization problems and gave a rundown of some of those issues, as well as the available solutions. Now the list of solutions has gotten even better.
How has parameter handling changed?
In the earlier version, you could specify if a parameter should be ignored during the crawling and indexing process. This ability was helpful in cases when the parameter was completely optional and didn’t change the content of the associated page. For instance, http://www.example.com/glee-is-awesome/reviews and http://www.example.com/glee-is-awesome/reviews?ssessionid=1234 both load the same content. The sessionid parameter can be ignored entirely.
This latest version solves a similar, but slightly different use case. For example, http://www.example.com/glee-is-awesome/episodes?sort=newest and http://www.example.com/glee-is-awesome/episodes?sort=oldest both load the same content in different sort orders, but the sort parameter can’t be ignored. Without it (http://www.example.com/glee-is-awesome/episodes), the content won’t load at all. In this case, Googlebot needs the parameter, but only needs to know one preferred value of it. You can specify, for instance, “newest” as the specific value for the “sort” parameter and Google will use that version of the URL as canonical. This means that Google will index that version and will consolidate links to all other versions to the canonical one. Google will use this value anytime it encounters the parameter across the site. Note that you have to choose a listed value — you can’t manually type in a value that Google hasn’t yet crawled.
Yahoo Site Explorer has a similar feature called Dynamic URL Rewriting, although it’s unclear if that data is still being used, since Microsoft Bing now powers Yahoo search.
Parameter handling is now located in its own tab under Settings.
New search queries data
With this release, Google Webmaster Tools also now provides more detailed query data, including the percentage change from the previous month of impressions, clicks, and click through rate. You can also see a chart that shows impression and click volumes for a specific query. The data is still available for only the most recent 30 days however. (In a much earlier version of this data, it was available for a six month period.)
Facebook Growing Fast in Brazil, but Orkut Still far Ahead
Oct 8th
Google’s social network Orkut never quite caught on in most countries, but it remains the most popular social network in Brazil. According to new data from comScore, Orkut remains safely ahead of Facebook there, with 36 million unique visitors last month. Facebook is only the third most popular social networking site in Brazil, but it is growing rapidly, and the site now attracts about 9 million visitors per month – up from just about 1.5 million a year ago. The second largest social networking site in Brazil is Windows Live, which reaches about 12.5 million visitors.
While Facebook’s growth is clearly outpacing Orkut, Google’s site remains far ahead of all of its competitors in Brazil. The site’s visitors also spend far more minutes on the site than the users of any of the other popular social networks in Brazil. The average Orkut user spent 275.8 minutes on the site in August, while the average Facebook user only spent 29.3 minutes on Facebook. While Windows Life’s profiles are quite popular in Brazil, its users only spent 5.5 minutes there and only visit 3.7 times per month (the average Orkut user visits the site at least once per day).
Twitter in Brazil: Highest Penetration in the World
Twitter is the fourth most popular social network in Brazil with about 8.6 million visitors in August. The service reaches about 23% of the Brazilian online population. According to comScore, this is the highest Twitter penetration in the world. Twitter is especially popular among younger users (15 to 24), while Facebook’s popularity in Brazil is higher among older users (25 and over).
It is also interesting to note how popular the relatively new Q&A site formspring.me has become in Brazil. There, the service gets about 3.6 million visitors per month – making it the fifth most popular social network in the country.

How Fast Does My Page Load Now?
Oct 8th
One of the many factors that can attract both people and search engines to your website is the speed at which it loads. If a site takes more than just a few seconds to load on a standard Broadband connection then most people aren’t going to stick around very long and most SEO experts generally agree that Google factors the speed of a page load into it’s ranking of sites. The bottom line is simple…get your site to load faster.
I have a very close friend who lives in Australia who often badgers me about how slow my site loads. He’ll send me a message in Skype or we’ll be chatting and he’ll begin to make fun of how slow Site Sketch 101 loads in Australia. When I load my site, it only takes about 4 or 5 seconds from start to finish so I always make fun of the Aussie internet services and tell him that his island full of convicts just needs to get caught up with modern society and get real internet.
The problem, however, isn’t his internet service…it’s my site. Even though I’m able to load my site in just a few seconds, my friend, Andrew is literally on the other side of the world trying to pull images, html, stylesheets and more off of my shared hosting platform in the United States. It’s slow.
Introducing the Cloudfront Server
So today I made a change. I uploaded my images, my media library and my includes file to an Amazon Cloudfront server. Amazon Cloudfront creates copies of my content on servers located around the world so that when I load my site, I’m connected to a server somewhere here in America and when Andrew tries to load my site, he’ll be connecting to a server in Australia. This allows both of us to experience faster load times and a much better overall experience for all my readers throughout the world.
Have you noticed Site Sketch 101 loading any faster for you? How fast does it load? What do you use to speed up the page loads on your website or blog? What advice would you give to others who are trying to accomplish this same task at their site?
